September 2003 Meeting Announcement
Featured topics:
- The Connection between Salton Sea Restoration and the QSA
- Prop 50 Update: How the State Budget Crisis has impacted Grant Opportunities
The Southern California Water Dialogue Group will meet on Tuesday, September 16th from noon - 3 pm at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California headquarters, 700 N. Alameda, Los Angeles, (213) 217-6000. The Steering Committee will meet from 10:00 - 11:30 am on the same date and in the same place (check with desk for room number).
Lunch will be served at 11:30 am (RSVP to [email protected], if you plan on joining us for lunch).
Salton Sea - Tom Kirk, Executive Director of the Salton Sea Authority, will discuss the connection between Salton Sea restoration efforts and implementation of the Quantification Settlement Agreement. The environmental impacts of impending water transfers have created serious complications in implementing the QSA. Recently, several innovative concepts have been developed that include a smaller sea and the use of desalination. Instead of being the environmental stumbling block, the Sea could actually facilitate getting water to the metropolitan plain. Mr. Kirk will present the Authority's perspective on these recent developments and the relationship of the Salton Sea to the region's current and future water supply.
Jerry Secundy, Executive Director of Audubon California, will speak on saving the Salton Sea inland wetland ecosystem with its millions of birds. During the 1990s, Audubon California began its involvement with the Salton Sea and their involvement continues to this day. Mr. Secundy also will weigh in on the associated contentious water issues.
How the Budget Crisis has impacted Grant Opportunities - The Water Dialogue will be updated on enabling legislation for Prop 50, how the budget crisis had impacted Prop 50, how much money will be used to fund existing programs, and how much funding will be available for competitive grants in each of the bond chapters.

Southern California Water Dialogue Mission Statement: Participants in the Southern California Water Dialogue meet voluntarily to explore water-related issues of vital interest to our region. The Dialogue serves as a clearinghouse and advocate for projects, activities, and processes that will improve the quality and reliability of Southern California's water supply and benefit the California Bay-Delta Authority (Authority). The Dialogue also is an avenue to represent Southern California's interests to the Authority and provide information about the Authority to our region.
